Congratulations on the Two S.-T. Yau High School Science Award Winners

The Award Ceremony of the 13th S.T. Yau High School Science Award took place in Tsinghua University on December 13. A total of 61 awards have been presented to the students in various subject categories, including Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer, Economic and Financial Modeling, as well as the Grand Prize. Ivan K and Jason L of Dulwich International High School Zhuhai received the Honorable Mention Awards in the Chemistry category. Congratulations to both!

The competition was quite intense this year. A total of 901 effective essays from 1,170 teams around the world were competing in the six categories, and only 92 of them made it to the final round. With their essay “Ferrous Ion Immobilized Carbon Dots Fluorescent Sensing Platform for Homogeneous Glucose Detection based on Fenton Reaction”, the two DHZH scientists made it to the final top 60.

What have they learned from this competition and what is the most valuable experience? Let’s check it out!

Q: Why did you choose this topic for your essay to the competition?

It was a coincidence that we came up with the idea of developing a cheap, facile, and environmentally friendly method to detect the glucose. During our internship at a lab, we found they used metal quantum dots being disposed to a special rubbish bin for exclusive process afterwards by the lab employees. We thought it is a waste and would be harmful to the environment, and decided to develop a green fluorescence probe for glucose detection with the guidance and support from our teacher, Mr. Shah.

Q: Are there any activities that you participated in for the in-depth study of this subject?

We have done a lot of research and read a large number of papers before and during the experiment, since we initially knew quite little about the subject field of nano fluorescence detecting materials. At the beginning of our internship at the lab, we were both exhausted for balancing our work and readings, but it was all worth it. We both have accumulated valuable experience during that time.

Our teacher Mr. Shah was quite supportive during the whole competition. His professional knowledge,  rich experience at the lab, as well as his sense of humor, empowered our success on the essay and achievements in the competition. We are very grateful to have had his help and support along the way.

Congratulations to the two again! Meanwhile, we greatly appreciate the supports of Mr. Nandish Shah from our Science Department, and the FOD of DHZH.

The S.-T. Yau High School Science Award

The S.-T. Yau High School Science Award was established by the great master of mathematics Shing-Tung Yau since 2008. It is available to the global Chinese high school students and requires them to submit their research reports instead of writing the standard answers to the examination, promoting the development of Chinese youth scientific research and helping the talented and enthusiastic teenagers to explore the mysteries of science. The competition has been well-recognized by the world-famous universities and masters, such as Harvard University, MIT, Yale University, Princeton University, Tsinghua University and so on, providing the students with lots of opportunities in the science field.
