2018 Shackleton Lecturer Announced

Dulwich College International and Dulwich International High School Zhuhai are proud to announce that this year’s Shackleton Lecturer will be Alexandra Shackleton, the granddaughter of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

The Shackleton Lectures are one of the highest profile visits in any Dulwich International Schools calendar. It is a lecture tour that brings some of the most fascinating people to our schools to talk to our students. The Shackleton Lectures reinforces the values of grit, determination and courage and how that, and a sense of adventure, should be applied to everyday life.

This year the Shackleton Lecture tour will take place between 10-24 September 2018.

The Honorable Alexandra Shackleton is the only granddaughter of the great Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. Life-president of the James Caird Society, which was founded to honour Shackleton and provide information about his expeditions, Ms. Shackleton looks after her grandfather's legacy, as well as the great man himself looked after his men. Ms. Shackleton has spent the past 25 years nurturing her grandfather's legacy, opening exhibitions and recently addressing the United Nations.

She has been much involved in telling the story of the achievements of Shackleton and his men, and has herself visited the Antarctic five times, the Arctic twice and the Falkland Islands nine times. She has been a Patron of numerous Antarctic expeditions, and is a champion for the preservation of this great wilderness.

Alexandra Shackleton is the Vice Patron of the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust, a Member of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society - and the recipient of the latter’s Bernier Medal. She named two ships and four boats; and carried out openings and unveilings all over the UK and a dozen countries abroad.  She is also a Member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.
