Energetic Sports and PE programs

One of the major impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on our School community as it related to movement around the province, has been that on inter-school sport. All Pearl River Conference (PRC) sports competitions from March 2020 have either been cancelled or indefinitely postponed. While our School has employed excellent pandemic prevention and control measures, the wider Guangdong school communities are still facing restrictions which prevent them travelling off-campus. This has unfortunately meant that our ability to participate in external sports competitions has been suspended until the various Education Bureaus allow inter-school travel. We are hopeful that we should be able to participate inter-school sport from December 2020 or January 2021.

In our School we have been able to get back to a fully inclusive PE Curriculum, in addition to a full program of CCA’s and Inter-House Sports competitions, while still respecting the Covid-19 prevention and control requirements. We have already completed two of these competitions, with Volleyball and Table-Tennis. Congratulations to Kevin Z, who became the 1st DHZH student to win the same House Competition for four successive years. Kevin has been boys singles House champion (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), and PRC boys singles table tennis champion (2018, 2019) for the last few years. I am sure he would have been PRC Champion again in 2020 had there been a competition. Similar congratulations extend to Linda X who has been House girls singles table tennis champion for the duration of her time at Dulwich (2018, 2019, 2020), in addition to impressive 3rd place finishes at the PRC competitions (2018, 2019). Shackleton House are very lucky to have two such talented individuals!

Our House volleyball competitions saw explosive, highly entertaining and highly skilled encounters in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Wing House emerged with the lion’s share of the points available, but Alleyn (girls) and Soong (boys) put up excellent competition to the widely experienced Wing teams.

To bolster external sports opportunities, nine boys participated in a Virtual Cross Country running competition organized through the Pearl River Conference over a distance of 5km. This took place on Wednesday 21st October. Jack, 12D, set a new School Record with a fantastic time of 21:10! Well done to Jack and all of the participants who completed the run. Both Mr Sweeney and Miss Ling would love to have our very talented girls join the event next time.

Unfortunately, due to some ongoing restrictions related to Covid-19, Sports Day (17th November) was postponed until further notice. When a new date has been set, I shall communicate this to our wider community. That makes the next sports House competitions (basketball) in December. Look forward to it!
